Safety

OK

While Istanbul is generally safe for tourists, petty crime like pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas. Political tensions and occasional protests may also pose risks.

Where to stay

1. Beyoğlu

An up and coming neighbourhood a stones throw away from İstiklal Caddesi, one of the most famous shopping streets in Istanbul. It's also close to must see attractions such as Galata Tower and is filled with beautiful European-style apartments from the late 19th and early 20th century.

Transport

Metro

Istanbul's metro system is one of the most efficient ways to navigate the city. The Istanbul Metro connects many key districts, making it easy to reach popular areas such as Taksim, Levent, and Kadıköy. The trains are modern, clean, and operate frequently, especially during peak hours.

The M2 line is particularly useful for tourists as it links major attractions, while several other lines extend across the city and even to the airport.

Tram

The iconic tramway is another convenient mode of transport in Istanbul. The Istanbul Tram runs from Taksim to Kabataş and includes the historic nostalgic tram line on Istiklal Street, providing a scenic way to explore the area. Trams are generally clean, efficient, and a great way to avoid traffic.

Bus

Istanbul has an extensive bus network that covers the city and surrounding areas. The Istanbul Electric Tram and Tunnel Enterprises (IETT) operates numerous lines. Buses can be crowded during peak hours, but they connect nearly all districts, making them a useful choice for getting around.

Ferry

One of the unique aspects of Istanbul's transport system is the ferry services across the Bosphorus. Ferries operated by the Istanbul Sea Buses (IDO) provide a scenic and enjoyable way to travel between the European and Asian sides of the city. They are frequent and a top choice for both locals and tourists, offering beautiful views of Istanbul's skyline.

Taxi

Taxis are widely available throughout Istanbul, identifiable by their yellow color. They can be hailed on the street, found at taxi ranks, or booked via phone. It's worth noting that traffic in Istanbul can be heavy, which may make taxi journeys longer and more expensive than anticipated. Always make sure the meter is running.

Ride-Hailing

Ridesharing apps like Uber, Getir and BiTaksi are also popular options for getting around the city. These services provide a more convenient and often cheaper alternative to traditional taxis. However, be mindful that during busy periods, surge prices may apply, making rides more expensive.

When sing BiTaksi some drivers, in our experience, will ask you pay cash rather than via the app. Just make sure you settle on a price before departing if you agree to this as they can try and charge you far more upon arriving at your destination if you do not.

🤫 Pro tip

Some taxi drivers can be particularly sketchy in Istanbul so use apps such as Bitaksi or Uber to hail rides and check the price in advance. Make sure you insist they turn on the meter or at the very least agree a price with your driver before setting off. If they refuse to turn on the meter or quote you a price you aren't comfortabe with refuse the ride and take another cab.
